Description

Encouraged by the growing demand for our Pinot Noir, we went on a search for more special vineyards in the Russian River Valley. We were able to secure a few acres from the Confidant Vineyard (adjacent to Copain). Our 2014 Pinot Noir is sourced from both the Confidant Vineyard and our previous source the Dutton Ranch - Barron Vineyard.

Vineyard Designation

Russian River Valley

Vineyard Notes

Bud break for 2014 was one of the earliest in recent years occurring in mid-March for Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. Although the dry winter of 2013/14 caused concerns over the ongoing drought, abundant rains in mid-February ensured that vineyards started the season with ample water in their soil profiles. Continued above average, but consistent, temperatures throughout the first half of the growing season ensured optimal vine development. As August approached harvest appeared that it would be extremely early for all varieties, but cooler weather from mid-August to mid-September led to a lengthening of the growing season and more gradual, even ripening than initially expected. This uniform and consistent ripening led to some of the highest quality seen in the past decade.

Each vineyard lot was fermented in open top tanks utilizing both punch downs and pumpovers to obtain the desired level of extraction from the fruit. The wine went to barrel with some yeast lees that were stirred every 2 weeks for the first 5 months of aging to add body and complexity. The 2014 vintage was filtered at bottling.
